Bermuda Shorts

An ever-changing collection of random thoughts from my mid-Atlantic island. Grab a seat and stay awhile. It's fun over here.

If you’re like me, nothing puts me in a summer mood more than a great reggae album (and if you’re not, well, it looks like you’re out of luck pal). Classics reggae is incomparable: Artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals and Jimmy Cliff have long sang the soundtracks of summer, certainly on islands like St. Croix and Bermuda where I’ve had the pleasure to call home. But if you’re searching for something new to add to your iTunes library then I’d recommend you keep reading.

I first heard the band Stick Figure while sailing in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, aboard a 50-foot wooden catamaran named Kekoa. It’s a boat that I’ve long been passionate about ever since I interviewed its captain, Vermont-born Jamison Witbeck, for a recent story in ISLANDS magazine called Live the Life: St. John. I also recommended the handcrafted boat in my story St. John The Divine, which ran in the now-defunct iPad app The Daily. But enough about me.

As the boat pulled away from the dock, for what indeed would be a blissful full-day adventure to Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, Captain Jamison blasted the Stick Figure song Breathe through the warm Caribbean air (it’s the song featured in the video above). And it was at that very moment when I asked what he was playing on his iPod. Turns out it was the band’s latest album, Burial Ground.

Go ahead. Give it a listen. When you’re done jamming out to Breathe try the album’s next song Golden Hour, with its constant chorus of “I love the o-shun.” So good, especially when you’re actually on the ocean. Rocky Road is another mellow fave, as is Dreamland, a chilled-out instrumental groove that sounds like a song Pink Floyd would’ve written if the classic rockers were a reggae band. For reals.

So what are you waiting for? Head over to iTunes to get your summer on. You can thank me later.
